About Medical Institute “Kutaisi”
In the oldest city of Georgia, special attention has been paid to medical education since the ancient times.
In 1992 in the reality of west Georgia, in Kutaisi, the first Medical Institute has been established according to the license, given away by the Ministry of Health. The inspirers of such a prudent idea were Giorgi Arveladze, Malkhaz Dvalishvili, Ioseb Katchakhidze and Nugzar Maghlakelidze. Medical Institute “Kutaisi” has gained a valuable place in Georgian educational sphere.
Active scientific works have commenced at the Medical Institute right from the beginning of the first academic year.
The first scientific-practical conference of doctors was held in 1993 by the guidance of the Institute founders, which later turned into the traditional event.
Some of the international conferences have taken place at the Institute, among them are :
• The Sixth Transcaucasian Conference of Morphologists- Tskaltubo, 1998;
• International Conference of Morphologists of the Black Sea Countries - Trabzon, Turkey, 2000 and 2001.
“Kutaisi Medical Journal” has been the Institute’s regular publication since 1994 which in 1995 took place in the international catalogue of accredited magazines.
Since 1995, life of the Medical Institute has been described in an each issue of the newsletter “Medea”.
The library equipped with modern educational and scientific literature supports and encourages the students of the Medical Institute in studying process. The fund of the library includes more than 18 000 modern teaching and scientific literature. Among them 5000 are published overseas. Several scientific monographs and text books financed by the protected Institute are kept at the library.
To improve studying process and maintain basis, the Institute established its own clinic. Neurological Clinic of the Institute, established in 1996, underwent reorganisation later and was given the status of a multi-profile clinic, and later in 1998 Dental Clinic was added to the exisisted one.
By the order of the Georgian Educational Institutional State Accrediting Agency Medical Institute “Kutaisi” has been awarded five years of institutional accreditation since 2007-2008.
Georgian Educational Institutional State Accrediting Agency has been coordinated by the Academic Board. 70% of teaching personnel has academic degrees.
Medical Institute “Kutaisi” actively cooperates with Al. Natishvili Morphology Institute. A memorandum is signed with Tbilisi State Medical University foreseeing bilateral cooperation in scientific and educational sphere. The Institute staff strives hard to collaborate with foreign medical institutions and clinics aiming at implementing exchange programs.
Studying at Medical Institute is based on 3 steps: Bachelor’s degree, Master’s Degree and Doctor’s degree.
Teaching and students’ evaluation is regulated by the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
There are 3 major specialties at the Institute: Medicine, Stomatology and Pharmacy.
Several students who graduated at the Institute, today work in different Medical Institutions of Georgia and foreign countries. Among them 5 were awarded academic degree of Medical Doctors’, 80% of the Institute specialists successfully passed licensure certification examinations.
The day of tomorrow is hopeful , the hope is connected is connected to a newly bought building of 5000 square meter space, that will be equiped with modern type lecture-rooms computer classes and a library. In addition to the studying territory Multipurpose Clinic will take place in the building where only honourable ones will master a doctor’s prudent profession.
